What we do

Cross Training members have many opportunities to get involved. Whether it is through a weekly meeting, a service activity, or through a one-on-one discipleship time, your teen is able to jump right into the middle of Cross Training and get involved. We have specifically designed activities to plug your teenager into the Word of God, and saturate them with solid Biblical teaching.
WHEN: Every Sunday Morning 10:00am – 10:45amWHERE: Cross Training Room
BRING: Bible and Pen
Apart from their personal pursuit of God through Bible study, your teenager will not have a more important 45 minutes in their week than the Fresh Start Cross Training meeting. Grades 7-12 meet together in the room for fellowship and enrichment around the Bible. In the Fresh Start meeting, teens are given challenged and taught how they ought to be living their lives.
The majority of this time is spent looking into a passage of scripture and applying it to life. The sermons are preached with discussion opportunities and relevance to teen’s daily lives in mind. The curriculum is planned in a 6-year block so that your teen gets a well-rounded grounding in the Bible. A fun welcome, opening announcement or skit starts off the morning, followed by prayer time; then we jump right into the preaching time. Pastor Jon is normally the speaker, but others are invited as situations arise. Cross Training meets every Sunday morning from 10:00am-10:45am.
WHEN: Every Wednesday Night 7:00pm – 8:30pm (September-May)WHERE: Cross Training Room
BRING: Bible
Cross Training Recharge is a break in the middle of the week for Oak Ridge Baptist Church teens. We entitled our Wednesday night meetings Recharge, because we want to get students focused back onto their purposes for the week. Recharge is different than anything we do with the teenagers. We have segments of time set aside for a competition, singing and praise to the Lord, and a challenge or workshop on specific topics of the Christian life. During the singing and praise time, we focus on teen’s response to worship, the Bible and the character of God. We see Recharge as a way to introduce new visitors into Cross Training, and to rekindle thoughts of God in the life of our members. Teens that participate in Cross Training often mention that the regular Recharge meetings are their favorite time. Topics that will be covered in Recharge meetings are: Purity, Evangelism, Attitudes, Priorities, Biblical Problem-solving, Love, Friends, Giving, Serving, Discipleship, and more.
Throughout the year various activities may happen at Recharge meetings. You could see the group heading out to visit some homebound members of the church, going door-to-door canvassing, or heading out on a quick field trip.
WHERE: Usually meet at the church.
What kind of a teen group would we be without our activities? We place high value in the times of fellowship and fun that can be had in an atmosphere that will allow teens to have a clean conscience before God.
Because of the emphasis on the Bible, all of our activities are considered outreach opportunities. This means your teens should always feel welcome to bring their friends, saved or unsaved. Activities are not only a great way for our teens to enjoy fellowship with other teens in our group, they are also great way of breaking new teens in to the ministry of the gospel through seeing other teens who love and serve God and by hearing God’s Word preached.
Events are scheduled into the yearly calendar that is published in January of every year. We do our best to stick to these, but church calendar changes, emergencies, weather, etc. have change our schedule in the past.
We will publish flyers for activities two weeks in advance with all vital information pertaining to the event. These are available on the tables in the lobby. Announcements will be made in Cross Training meetings and in the services. Updates for wavering activites will be posted on the Church information line (865.482.4481 x33)
Various activities include: manhunt, fallFEST, video scavenger hunts, hayrides, hiking, sports Saturdays, downhill skiing, paintball, Farm Fest, whitewater rafting, guys expeditions, caving, Harvest Rally, girl’s night out, game nights, clue hunts, picnics, afternoon trips, capture the flag, xbox tournaments, hillbilly putt-putt, caroling, Y-12 Security Training, underground church, tubing, seasonal activities…and more.
WHERE: Teen or Youth Staff Home
BRING: $$ or Food items - - Girls normally bring a dessert; Guys bring a 2-liter.
At some time during the month after the evening service, teens go by the church van to a local home for food, signing and testimonies. If you are interested in hosting a singspiration in your home, please contact Pastor Jon or Beth.
WHEN: Friday night of Evangelistic Services(1 per year)WHERE: Oak Ridge Baptist Church
BRING: Visitors
During our evangelistic meetings, we designate a specific evening as youth night. This is a special emphasis for our teens to attend, but also for them to bring visitors. Activities may accompany the service beforehand or throughout the week, so watch for information. Please strive to include your teen in as much of the canvassing, praying, and participating as is feasible for your family to handle. It will be an event to remember.
At Cola Wars 2005, we had over 100 teenagers attend for our Youth Emphasis night. Some have stayed with us ever since.
WHERE: Different every year. We have been to New York and Canada.
The Cross Training Mission Trips are the highlight of the year. It is on the mission trips where teens get to apply the workings of the spiritual truths they have been learning all year long. The mission trip thrusts teens into an environment outside their comfort zones where they are pushed to serve, depend upon God, and share the gospel. Different from our summer camp trip where we seek to cultivate the heart of our teens, the mission trip takes that a step further to taking that heart and putting it into action. The mission trip is a watermark of the teen’s Cross Training career, and every avenue should be taken to see that your teen comes with us. They will learn ministry skills, find greater burden for missions, see a need for the gospel outside their world, and grow in their walk with the Lord.
WHERE: The Wilds Christian Camp, N.C., Camp CoBeAc, Northland Camp
There is no more important event in your teen’s life than a week of summer camp. While at camp your teen is removed from the distractions of home, and confronted and saturated with God’s Word. At camp they are taken out of their comfortable everyday environment, and placed into a sterile environment where they are better in tune to what the Spirit of God has for their lives. Please make every effort to send your teen to camp with us, they will benefit greatly from the one-on-one counseling times and love the camping atmosphere.
Because of the popularity of camp, we register for camp the beginning of November. A registration form and $25 deposit are required to register for camp. Camp fills up fast, so we have to register early. Check the bulletin and teen calendar for information about when to sign up.
WHEN: Late JulyWHERE: Church
WHO: Teens interested in serving children.
Cross Training teens are encouraged heavily to participate in our VBS program for elementary age children. They will benefit greatly from serving, and VBS is a great time to learn the skills of ministry develop a heart for souls, and have fun doing it. There are many opportunities for teens to get involved in VBS. From work days, to canvassing and leading a group, teens can jump in and have a blast during our yearly VBS outreach.
WHERE: Front of the Auditorium
WHO: Anyone 15 years old and above.
If your teen has a love for God’s music, than church choir would love to have them. Auditions are required to join, and every Sunday there is an opportunity to use their talents for the Lord. If a teen joins the choir (as with any ministry at ORBC) they should fulfill their duties with faithfulness by being on time to rehearsals, working hard, and being responsible.
